Dio/Holy Diver (1983)

A quintessential album for lovers of tried and true metal. Ronnie James Dio splashed onto the scene with his first solo album in '83, after having already been in music for nearly 30 years! Holy Diver is a pretty solid album, with Gypsy being the only track I could do without, and even then it's stellar. 9 tracks of some of the most epic lyrics written by one of metal's shortest men. The album opens with the ripper Stand Up and Shout, which is pretty much all you need to start headbanging. That leads right into Holy Diver, one of Dio's most beloved tracks. The second side (I listen to this mostly on cassette tape in my car or vinyl at home, so I refer to sides) is nearly non-stop rocking. Straight Through The Heart is just classic Dio. Invisible opens with a 1 minute intro that turns into a stomping good time, and then comes the classic Rainbow In the Dark, continuing the tradition of awesome Dio songs that have really weird metaphors that I don't understand but still feel are awesome. Then to close out the album you have Shame On The Night, a Doom-y, Sabbath-esq track. And then when it's all over, you can start back up again with Stand Up And Shout and get pumped all over.
