Tool - Lateralus

Blackcoffeeaddict looking up from the nearest reaches of outer space:

Released in May 2001, Lateralus is arguably the band's most heady album. Combining wild, dysphoric beats with Maynard James Keenan's philosophical ponderings on life and the nature of the universe, it is not an album for the faint of heart.

There are albums that are for relaxed, laid back listening, something to hear when you don't want to think to much. This is not one of those albums. This album is like entering your mind into a gladiator's match. This is an album that you listen to when you want to think a lot. It requires your full focus and attention to hear properly. Turn it up real loud and start from the beginning.

If you can't muster the internal fortitude to listen to the whole album, the three-song combination of Schism, Parabole, and Parabola is the centerpiece of the record, and a must-listen. Lateralus and The Grudge are my other personal favorites, but the whole album is just amazing.

It is not an album that could be described as "refreshing," nor is it "nice" or "pleasant." Lateralus is a journey into the intense inner workings of the mind.

It sounds intense now, but the experience is worth it. So set aside 80 minutes of your time and listen to this record ASAP.
