The Human Romance is the latest effort from this East Coast American Melodic Death Metal band. While Darkest Hour are still taking pages out of the books of At The Gates and Dark Tranquility, they are doing a great job of making it their own, and making it quality. Fist-pumping riffs, beat blasting drums, and scream-til-you're-hoarse vocals mix fill out this 12 track album. While they have the aggression and riffage to rouse the pit, they also make a few emotional, beautiful turns that really even out the album. The pulsating, charging Man & Swine and Your Everyday Disaster are great but expected fare, while Love as a Weapon and especially Terra Solaris (an 8 1/2 minute instrumental) are unexpectedly full of emotion, and at times, beautiful. While nearly all of Darkest Hour's catalog is a solid, even affair, The Human Romance would be a great entry point for new fans.
